JoSAA Counselling for Parents: What to Do, When, and What to Pay

By Team JEE Prep Master · Updated 29 October 2026 · ~8 min read

As a parent, your job in JoSAA is to make sure nothing is missed: certificates with the right dates, ₹30,000 for the seat acceptance fee (plus ₹45,000 for an NIT seat), daily portal checks, and the float-or-freeze call after each round. You must also sign if your child withdraws a seat.

This plain-language checklist follows the official JoSAA 2026 rules, step by step.

Your Role, in One Line

Your child makes the choices and clicks the buttons; you make sure nothing is missed: deadlines, documents, payments and the decisions after each round. JoSAA is strict: the Business Rules say plainly that no deadline is extended and many steps can't be undone.

Before JoSAA Starts (May)

  1. Check the 75% rule. Class 12 marks of 75% (65% for SC, ST, PwD), or the top 20 percentile of the board. See JoSAA 75% criteria.
  2. Get certificates in time. An EWS or OBC-NCL certificate must be issued on or after 1 April of the counselling year (or be online-verifiable and valid till the deadline). A wrong certificate can cost the reserved seat and ₹5,000.
  3. Get the medical certificate in the JoSAA format from a registered doctor.
  4. Keep money ready: ₹30,000 seat acceptance fee (₹15,000 for SC, ST, PwD). For an NIT, IIIT or GFTI seat, another ₹45,000 (₹20,000) Partial Admission Fee after Round 5.
  5. Keep a bank cheque or passbook image ready; it is on the documents list for refunds.

During Choice Filling (about 10 days)

  • Sit with your child and agree on what matters most: branch, college, city or fees. That decides the order of the list.
  • Make sure the list is long enough. In 2026 students filled about 169 choices on average.
  • Remove any college your child would refuse to join. Rejecting an allotted seat ends JoSAA for them.
  • Watch both mock allocations and adjust the list.
  • Make sure the list is locked (or saved) before the deadline. Unsaved choices are lost.

After Each Round

  1. Log in after every allocation. JoSAA sends no separate message.
  2. If a seat is allotted: accept it (freeze, float or slide), upload documents and pay the fee on the first day. Documents are verified only after payment.
  3. Check the portal daily for queries until the round closes. An unanswered query cancels the seat.
  4. Decide float or freeze together. See freeze, float and slide.

Where a Parent Must Sign

If your child wants to withdraw an accepted seat, the withdrawal form must carry the signature of a parent or guardian, or it is not processed. Withdrawal is allowed from Round 2 (until Round 4 for IIT seats) and returns the fee minus ₹7,000 (JoSAA 2026 Business Rules (1 June 2026), clause 66 and Annexure 8).

One more decision only a family can make: if your child might drop a year to retake JEE Advanced, decide before Round 5. A seat received for the first time in Round 5 without exiting earlier counts as accepted, and accepting a JoSAA seat makes a student ineligible for the next JEE Advanced (clause 70).

Reporting at the College

IIT seats: report at the IIT after JoSAA ends; certificates are re-checked and there is biometric verification. NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats: physical reporting happens after the CSAB special rounds. The institute then collects its balance fee. Check each institute's own website for fees and fee waivers; JoSAA does not set them (clauses 39, 54 and 55).

A Real Example

Ishaan Singh, one of our students, got JEE Advanced 2026 AIR 2,046 and chose IIT Delhi Mechanical Engineering, a program that closed at 2,205 in the 2026 final round (OPEN, gender-neutral).

Frequently Asked Questions

Does a parent need to go for JoSAA reporting?

JoSAA reporting for seat acceptance is online. Physical reporting is at the allotted institute after JoSAA (IITs) or after CSAB special rounds (NIT+). Check the institute's own reporting notice for who must attend.

Does the parent need to sign anything in JoSAA?

Yes, the seat withdrawal form must be signed by a parent or guardian, or it is not accepted.

How much money should parents keep ready for JoSAA?

₹30,000 (₹15,000 for SC, ST, PwD) for the seat acceptance fee, plus ₹45,000 (₹20,000) Partial Admission Fee for NIT, IIIT or GFTI seats, before the institute's own fee.

Can parents fill JoSAA choices for the child?

Choices are filled on the candidate's JoSAA login. JoSAA advises candidates not to share login details, so sit together and let the student enter the list.

What is the biggest mistake parents can avoid?

Missing a deadline or a document query. JoSAA does not extend deadlines and raises queries only on the portal.
