Freeze keeps your seat and ends JoSAA for you. Slide keeps your seat and lets you move up within the same institute. Float keeps your seat and lets you move up to any higher choice. All three mean you have accepted the seat.
Here is how each works, a worked example, and the rules that catch students out, from the official JoSAA 2026 Business Rules.
| Option | You keep this seat? | Considered for later rounds? | Can move to |
|---|---|---|---|
| Freeze | Yes | No | Nowhere: this seat is final |
| Slide | Yes | Yes | A higher choice in the same institute only |
| Float | Yes | Yes | A higher choice in any institute |

All three mean you accept the seat. You still have to upload documents and pay the seat acceptance fee in that round. Not choosing any option counts as rejecting the seat, and a rejected seat takes you out of JoSAA (clause 48).
Say your list starts with: 1. NIT Trichy CSE, 2. NIT Trichy ECE, 3. NIT Surathkal CSE, 4. NIT Warangal ECE. In Round 1 you get choice 4, NIT Warangal ECE.
For reference, in the 2026 final round NIT Trichy CSE closed at JEE Main rank 1,373, NIT Surathkal CSE at 1,954 and NIT Warangal CSE at 2,581 (Other State, OPEN). Closing ranks move between rounds as students upgrade, freeze or withdraw, which is what float and slide let you catch.
One rule makes float safe: JoSAA only moves you to a choice you placed higher. If you wouldn't take a seat, it shouldn't be on your list at all (see JoSAA choice filling).
Freeze keeps your seat and ends JoSAA for you. Slide keeps your seat but lets you move to a higher choice in the same institute. Float keeps your seat but lets you move to a higher choice in any institute.
You choose when you accept a seat. You can later switch float to slide or freeze, or slide to freeze, in any round except the last. Freeze cannot be changed.
Only if you get a higher choice. The new seat automatically replaces the old one. If nothing better opens, you keep your current seat.
No. Float and slide are not available in the last round.
Then freeze is the only option. You either freeze the seat or reject it.
Yes, as long as every choice above your current seat is one you would actually join. If you reject an upgrade, you lose all seats.
