What Opening and Closing Rank Mean

  • Opening rank is the best (smallest) rank that was allotted a seat in that program in that round.
  • Closing rank is the last (largest) rank that got a seat. If your rank is smaller than the closing rank and you listed the program high enough, you would have got it.
  • For reserved categories (OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST) both are category ranks.
  • Ranks are published for every round. This page shows the final round, which is the most useful guide for next year.

How to Use Closing Ranks for JoSAA 2027

  1. Use the final round, not Round 1. Closing ranks usually rise between rounds as students drop or upgrade.
  2. Check your exact pool: category, gender pool and quota. A Home State closing rank can be very different from the Other State one.
  3. Look at more than one year. A program can jump when seats are added or a new branch becomes popular.
  4. Fill a long list. In JoSAA 2026, students filled about 169 choices each on average (3.57 crore choices by 2,11,310 registered candidates).
