By Team JEE Prep Master · Updated 29 October 2026 · ~7 min read

For JoSAA you need proof of date of birth, your Class 12 marksheet, the JoSAA medical certificate, a bank cheque or passbook image, and any category, PwD or nationality certificates that apply. NIT, IIIT and GFTI seats also need your JEE Main admit card.

Below is the full official list, the date rule that trips up most EWS and OBC-NCL students, and what happens if a certificate is rejected.

If a certificate is not in English or Hindi, you also need a certified English or Hindi translation. The verifying officer also checks the special eligibility conditions of every choice up to and including the seat you got.

Date Rules for Category Certificates

This is where most students get caught. For OBC-NCL and GEN-EWS, the certificate must be either:

  • issued on or after 1 April of the counselling year (1 April 2026 for JoSAA 2026), or
  • a government-issued, online-verifiable certificate that stays valid until 21 July 2026 for IIT/IISc seats, or until 31 August 2026 (or your reporting day, if later) for NIT+ seats.

Two state-specific rules: caste certificates from Maharashtra need the state's caste validity certificate, and ST certificates from Tamil Nadu must be issued by the Revenue Divisional Officer.

What Happens If a Certificate Is Rejected

JoSAA doesn't simply cancel you; it changes your category tag and tries again in the next round (clauses 74 and 75):

  • If your seat was in the OPEN category, an invalid category certificate doesn't matter: the seat is still confirmed if everything else is fine.
  • If your seat was in OBC-NCL, GEN-EWS, SC or ST, that seat is cancelled and you are considered as a GEN candidate in later rounds.
  • If your seat was a PwD seat and the PwD certificate fails, you are considered in your own category later, unless you used a scribe or extra time in JEE Advanced, in which case you are out of JoSAA.

A seat cancelled for a document problem also costs ₹5,000 of your seat acceptance fee (see JoSAA fees and refunds).

Upload Early and Watch for Queries

  1. Pre-upload during registration. JoSAA lets you upload documents while you fill choices (2 to 11 June in 2026). It's optional, but JoSAA recommends it to avoid last-minute failures.
  2. Pay the fee on day one of your round. Documents are verified only after the seat acceptance fee is paid.
  3. Check the portal daily for queries. JoSAA raises queries only on the portal, with no SMS or email. Not answering in time cancels your seat and removes you from JoSAA (clause 42).
  4. Carry originals when you report. The admitting institute checks every certificate again, and IITs also do biometric verification (clauses 54 and 55).

The Medical Certificate

JoSAA gives its own format (Annexure 7), filled by a registered medical practitioner. It records vision, hearing, chest measurement and other basics. Colour-blind candidates and those with vision in one eye are restricted from some programs, so check the restrictions list on the JoSAA website before you fill those choices.

Frequently Asked Questions

What documents are required for JoSAA counselling?

Proof of date of birth, Class 12 marksheet, JEE Main admit card (for NIT+ seats), category and PwD certificates if applicable, a cancelled cheque or passbook image, the JoSAA medical certificate, and OCI/PIO or passport documents if they apply.

Which date should my EWS or OBC-NCL certificate have?

For JoSAA 2026 it had to be issued on or after 1 April 2026, or be an online-verifiable government certificate valid until 21 July 2026 (IITs) or 31 August 2026 or the reporting day (NIT+).

What if my category certificate is rejected in JoSAA?

If you got an OPEN seat, nothing changes. If you got a reserved seat, that seat is cancelled and you are considered as GEN in later rounds. You also lose ₹5,000 of the seat acceptance fee if the seat is cancelled.

Is the JEE Main admit card needed for IIT seats?

No. It is on the NIT+ document list, not the IIT/IISc list.

Can I upload JoSAA documents before getting a seat?

Yes. JoSAA allows pre-upload during registration and choice filling. It is optional but recommended.
