JoSAA gives you the highest choice on your list that your rank can get, so fill choices in order of preference and include enough safe options. In 2026 students filled about 169 choices each. Use both mock allocations and lock before the deadline.
This guide covers how to build and order your list, with official JoSAA 2026 numbers and rules.
JoSAA gives you the highest choice on your list that your rank can get, considering your category, gender pool and home state (clause 2). It never gives you a seat that isn't on your list (clause 39), and you get only one seat even if you are eligible through JEE Advanced and JEE Main (clause 38).
So the order of your list is your decision about what you prefer. Your rank decides how far down the list you go.
In JoSAA 2026, 2,11,310 candidates filled 3,56,84,633 choices: about 169 choices each on average (JEE (Advanced) 2026 Report, Volume I, JoSAA statistics). The 52,559 JEE Advanced-qualified candidates, who could list IITs too, filled 78,13,122 choices, about 149 each. Students who fill only 10 or 20 choices risk getting no seat at all if those close above their rank.
A good list has three layers:
Put them in order of what you actually want, not in order of chance. JoSAA will skip the ones your rank can't reach.
Since JoSAA gives the highest possible choice, placing a seat you want more below one you want less can cost you. Example from the 2026 final round (Other State, OPEN): NIT Trichy CSE closed at JEE Main rank 1,373 and NIT Warangal CSE at 2,581. If you would rather study at Trichy, Trichy must come first, even though Warangal was easier.
Don't put a choice on your list that you wouldn't join. If JoSAA gives it to you and you reject it, you are out of all later rounds (clause 46).
JoSAA runs two mock allocations during choice filling (8 and 10 June in 2026). They show what you would get if the allocation ran that day. Use them to see whether your list is too short or too risky, then adjust. The choice filling window is not extended "under any circumstances" (clause 39).
Also check special conditions before you add a program: some have medical restrictions (for example colour blindness), and the documents officer checks the conditions of every choice above your seat.
There is no fixed number, but in JoSAA 2026 students filled about 169 choices on average (3.57 crore choices from 2.11 lakh candidates). Include enough Safe choices so you don't end up with no seat.

No. If JoSAA gives you a seat and you reject it, you are out of all later rounds. Only list seats you would join.
