IIT vs NIT: Which Is Right for You? (Real JoSAA 2026 Cutoffs, Not Opinions)

By Team JEE Prep Master · Updated 29 October 2026 · ~9 min read

IITs admit on JEE Advanced ranks and NITs on JEE Main ranks, so their cutoffs cannot be compared number for number. IITs have no home-state quota; NITs keep half their seats for their own state.

This guide uses official JoSAA 2026 closing ranks and the JEE Advanced 2026 report to show the real differences, and how to decide for your rank.

IIT and NIT Cutoffs Are on Different Rank Lists

The most common mistake in "IIT vs NIT" comparisons is putting a JEE Advanced rank next to a JEE Main rank as if they were the same thing. They are not. IITs fill seats from the JEE Advanced rank list, which only has students who qualified JEE Advanced (56,880 qualified in 2026). NITs fill seats from the JEE Main rank list, which has more than 13 lakh students.

NIT Warangal (Other State)2,581JEE Main

So "IIT Bhilai CSE at 8,886" and "NIT Trichy CSE at 1,373" are not comparable numbers. If you qualified JEE Advanced, you hold both ranks and can put IITs and NITs in the same JoSAA choice list.

Branch vs Brand: What Students Actually Chose in 2026

Within the IITs, the 2026 closing ranks show how students trade a famous name against a preferred branch. Around JEE Advanced rank 4,200 to 4,900, these three seats all filled:

  • IIT Dhanbad CSE closed at 4,167
  • IIT Bombay Civil Engineering closed at 4,417
  • IIT Bhubaneswar CSE closed at 4,899

So a student near rank 4,400 had a real choice: CSE at a newer IIT, or a core branch at IIT Bombay. The same choice appears between an IIT core branch and CSE at a top NIT. There is no single right answer. Ask yourself which you would regret more: studying a branch you don't enjoy, or a campus that matters less to you.

Where the Top 5,000 Went

The JEE Advanced 2026 report shows 4,631 of the top 5,000 JEE Advanced rankers were allotted IIT seats, with IIT Bombay (764), IIT Delhi (587), IIT Kharagpur (482), IIT Madras (477) and IIT Kanpur (454) taking the most. Top rankers overwhelmingly pick IITs.

IIT or NIT: How to Decide for Your Rank

  1. Not qualified for JEE Advanced? Then NITs, IIITs and GFTIs are your JoSAA options. Your home-state NIT often closes much later for you; NIT Trichy CSE closed at 4,015 for Tamil Nadu students against 1,373 for others.
  2. Qualified, with a good Advanced rank? List the IIT programs you'd genuinely study first, then the NIT programs you prefer to the rest.
  3. Torn between an IIT core branch and NIT CSE? Put the one you'd choose today higher in your list. JoSAA gives you the highest choice your rank allows, so the order of your list is your decision.
  4. Fill enough choices. In JoSAA 2026, 2,11,310 students filled 3.57 crore choices, about 169 each. A short list risks leaving you with no seat.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is IIT better than NIT?

IITs are harder to get: they take only JEE Advanced qualifiers, and top rankers overwhelmingly choose them (4,631 of the top 5,000 in 2026). But a branch you like at a top NIT can be a better fit than a branch you dislike at an IIT. Decide on branch and institute together.

Can I compare IIT and NIT cutoffs directly?

No. IIT closing ranks are JEE Advanced ranks and NIT closing ranks are JEE Main ranks. They are different lists of different sizes.

Can I fill IITs and NITs in the same JoSAA list?

Yes. If you qualified JEE Advanced, you can list IIT and NIT programs together in one JoSAA choice list, in any order you like.

Do IITs have home state quota?

No. All IIT seats are All India quota. NITs keep half their seats for students from their own state.

Which is better: IIT core branch or NIT CSE?

It depends on what you want to study. In 2026, IIT Bombay Civil closed at JEE Advanced rank 4,417 while IIT Bhubaneswar CSE closed at 4,899, so students at similar ranks made both choices. Pick the branch you would enjoy for four years.
